Ways to Get Healthier in the New Year
One of the most commonly made New Year’s resolutions is to get healthier. Less than half of the people that make these resolutions stick to them 6 months into the year. The statistics paint a bleak picture, but there is no reason why you can’t get healthier in the New Year. With a few tips and insider knowledge, you will be on your way to a healthier, happier year. Below are some of the ways to easily get healthier in the New Year.
- 1. Make a plan
No one takes a long trip without planning out their journey first. You will arrive tired, hungry and fatigued if you do arrive at all. The same applies to taking the road to a healthier life. It is best to outline the goals and changes that you want to make in your life before January 1st come knocking. Also think about how these changes will be fitted into your schedule. It is often much easier to take small but steady steps rather than trying to do everything at once.

This is especially the case for people who want to lose weight. It is much easier to shed the extra weight if you have your food intake under control. Any nutritionist or health expert worth their salt knows the importance of using smaller plates and bowls as part of portion control. This will help you avoid overeating as well as promote weight loss. You can trick your stomach into feeling fuller on less food by choosing a small sized plate or bowl.

Most people are unaware of the amount of calories they consume, and are later surprised when they gain weight. The idea is to keep track of everything you eat. This isn’t something that you will have to do for the rest of your life. It is simply something to get you started on a healthier path. Tracking what you eat is a real eye opening experience. You will discover the unhealthy foods that you tend to binge on, and therefore fix the problem where it arises. It also becomes easier to change up your diet such that you can still enjoy the foods that you love without compromising your newly found healthy lifestyle.

A lot of people wrongly believe that only people with certain skin pigmentation are susceptible to sun exposure. It is important to note that this affects everyone; and it is therefore important to take the necessary steps to avoid it. Skin damage starts at an early age although the onset of skin cancer is most common with people over the age of 50. With that in mind, invest in a good quality broad spectrum sunscreen. This should be worn all the time, whether it is on a day out in the sun or during winter. Such a small easy step can mean the difference between being healthy and developing skin cancer among other complications.

It comes as no surprise that exercise is a big part of ways to get healthy in the New Year. Regular exercise comes with many advantages including burning calories and building a healthy body among others. Start slow with simple exercises that you are comfortable with, and build up gradually by increasing the time and intensity as your body adjusts to your exercise regime. If you haven’t exercised in years, or suffer from pre-existing medical conditions, it is important to first talk to you doctor to ensure that you can safely start to exercise again. It is much easier to stick to a work out plan that doesn’t strain you especially in the initial stages, so remember to start small.
- 6. Take time out for yourself
Sometimes getting away from family and friends even for just a weekend might just be what you need to cement your path to a healthier lifestyle.
